SPINFED

Punjab is famous for producing large quantities of high quality cotton. Spinfed, an apex body of cooperative spinning mills in Punjab, was started in 1980 and today has seven mills, located in the cotton belt. The mills have a spindlage capacity of 1.3 lacs and 2280 rottors. 7,000 persons are directly employed in the mills and the annual turnover is about Rs 200 crore. At present, Spinfed and its member mills are in profit: Rs 260 lac cash profit up to October, 1997.

As a cotton-marketing federation, Spinfed purchases cotton directly from the farmers and markets it either as raw material or yarn. Up to now Punjab cotton is exported, but plans for domestic cotton-marketing are being formulated.

Spinfed was established in 1980 for coordinating and facilitating the working of affiliated Cooperative Spinning Mills and to provide assistance in promoting and organising new mills in the state. Presently three mills are operating at Abohar, Bathinda and Goindwal Saheb.

Ginning & Pressing

The cooperative mills were set up to benefit cotton growers by directly purchasing cotton from them, and to benefit the economy of the state by selling a value-added product, namely yarn. The Spinfed ginning plant is a Lummus model imported from the USA. It can gin 33,000 bales of cotton per year. Between ginning plant and blow-room, strict quality control is maintained (test on HVI 900 Series from Zellweger, Spin Lab Uster for final grading).

Ginned cotton is sold to many foreign countries, including Indonesia, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Dubai and Taiwan. Spinfed’s extension programme offers farmers quality seed and Spinfed experts monitor the health of the crop as well as its harvesting and collection from the fields. Ginning is done at Spinfed’s own modern plants. We are equipped with modern machinery -- Schlorforst Autoconer - 238, Leewha TFO, (South Korea), Inglosted Rottors (West Germany).
